John W. Newcombe invented the seperator, which was designed to seperate dust and particulates from the atmosphere. In early 1927 Newcombes Seperator was used in a handheld "Newcombe Baglass" cleaner.

This led to the first verticle floor model and had established itself as a household cleaning system.

in 1929, a new company named Rexair meaning "King of the Air" was formed and with new investment, further development saw the introduction of water to the machine, trapping dust and dirt.

The innovation made the Rexair machine unique and in 1955 Rexair machine was renamed the "Rainbow".
